With the demise of the Eos, the Beetle Convertible carries the torch for Volkswagen drop-tops for 2016. There are a handful of minor changes in store for the plucky little Bug, designed to keep the good times rolling for open-air enthusiasts.
Those hoping for a Beetle with more pep may be disappointed to hear that the Sportline trim is no more. The 210-hp turbocharged four-cylinder from the GTI is no longer on offer, neither, for that matter is the firmed up ride and direct electromechanical steering. The Classic trim finds a permanent home on in the lineup following its introduction into the lineup last autumn. In the process, it has lost its Reflex and Moonrock Silver paints, leaving a choice of White or Black.
In its place is a new Denim edition. As its name suggest, it’s a jean-themed machine, with Denim-coloured cloth roof, jean-inspired upholstery with blue leatherette accents, contrasting stitching, and the requisite little red tag – but no accent rivets. It’s available in Stonewashed Blue or White. Despite the added retro flair, it’s not the most expensive model in the range at $29,350. The base Trendline+ and Comfortline receive three new colours: Silk Blue, Habanero Orange, and Dark Bronze.
Regardless of trim, all Beetles are powered by Volkswagen’s smooth 1.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It develops 170 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, and comes paired exclusively to a six-speed automatic transmission. All Beetles also get split-folding 50/50 rear seats, a standard power-operated top, which can be raised or lowered in around 10 seconds at speeds of up to 50 km/h.
For 2016, Volkswagen has given the Beetle’s infotainment systems a handy upgrade. The base Trendline+ now receives a touchscreen display (5.0 inches) with SD card, USB port, CD player, and a reverse camera. The Classic, Denim, and Comfortline build on this setup with a larger 6.3-inch screen with proximity sensor, CD player, and VW’s new App Connect interface which features Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.
Pricing for the 2016 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible start at $26,850 for the Trendline+; the range-topping Comfortline sells for $30,550.
